Auto Insurance in
Naples, Florida

Florida's no-fault laws, high uninsured driver rates, and seasonal traffic make auto insurance more complex than most people realize. Bruno shops multiple carriers to find the right coverage for your vehicles — personal or commercial — throughout Collier and Lee County.

The Building Blocks of
Florida Auto Coverage

Florida auto insurance has specific requirements and common pitfalls. Understanding each coverage type helps you make informed decisions — and avoid being underinsured when it matters most.

PIP (Required)

Personal Injury Protection — Florida's no-fault requirement. Pays 80% of your medical bills and 60% of lost wages up to $10,000, regardless of who caused the accident.

Liability

Pays for injuries or property damage you cause to others. Florida minimum ($10K PDL) is dangerously low. Higher limits protect your personal assets if you're at fault in a serious accident.

Uninsured Motorist

Florida has one of the highest uninsured driver rates in the US — up to 26%. UM/UIM coverage protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. This is often the most critical coverage you can carry.

Comprehensive & Collision

Comprehensive covers theft, vandalism, weather damage, and animal strikes. Collision covers your vehicle when you're in an at-fault accident. Required by lenders — and smart if your vehicle's value exceeds $8,000.

Why Florida Auto Insurance
Is Different

No-Fault State — What It Actually Means

Florida is one of only 12 no-fault states. Your own PIP insurance pays your medical bills first, regardless of who caused the accident. This speeds up claims — but PIP only covers up to $10,000, which is exhausted quickly in a serious injury.

Beyond PIP, Florida law allows you to sue for damages if your injury meets the "serious injury threshold" — permanent injury, significant scarring, or death. This is where having proper bodily injury liability becomes critical, both to protect yourself and to cover others you may injure.

Many Naples drivers are surprised to learn their minimum coverage leaves them personally exposed. Bruno reviews your current policy and shows you exactly where the gaps are — at no cost.

SWFL-Specific Risks on the Road

Southwest Florida's roads present specific challenges. US-41 and I-75 carry heavy through traffic, including commercial trucks. During season (November–April), the population of Collier County increases significantly — bringing drivers unfamiliar with local roads.

Naples also has a significant population of older drivers, who statistically are involved in more accidents at intersections. And with Florida's year-round sun, glare-related accidents are common on east-west roads in the mornings and evenings.

For rideshare or delivery drivers (Uber, Lyft, DoorDash), personal auto policies explicitly exclude commercial activity. A rideshare endorsement is required to avoid a coverage denial when you need it most. Learn more about what to do after an accident →

Florida Auto Insurance
— Answered

What is PIP insurance and why is it required in Florida?+
PIP stands for Personal Injury Protection. Florida is a no-fault state, which means your own insurance pays your medical bills after an accident regardless of who was at fault. Florida law requires a minimum of $10,000 in PIP coverage for all registered vehicles. PIP pays 80% of your medical expenses and 60% of lost wages up to that limit — but that limit is exhausted quickly in any serious accident.
Is the Florida minimum auto insurance coverage enough?+
In most cases, no. Florida's minimum requirement is $10,000 PIP and $10,000 in property damage liability. A single trip to the emergency room can easily exceed $10,000. If you cause an accident that injures multiple people or causes significant property damage, your minimum limits will be quickly exhausted — and you are personally liable for the remainder. Most experienced agents strongly recommend carrying significantly higher limits.
What happens if the other driver doesn't have insurance in Florida?+
Florida consistently ranks among the top states for uninsured drivers — estimates range from 20 to 26% of all drivers. If an uninsured driver causes an accident that injures you, your PIP pays first (up to $10K), but Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage steps in for injuries beyond that threshold. Without UM coverage, you may have little to no financial recovery for serious injuries caused by a driver with no insurance. This coverage is critical in Florida.
Do I need full coverage or just liability for my car?+
If you have a loan or lease on your vehicle, your lender requires full coverage (comprehensive + collision). If you own your vehicle outright, the choice is yours — but consider the vehicle's value. If your car is worth $15,000 and you carry only liability, a non-fault accident (like a tree falling on it or a hit-and-run) means you absorb the full repair cost. Full coverage typically makes financial sense when your vehicle is worth $8,000 or more.
My teen just got their license. How does that affect my premium?+
Adding a teen driver typically increases premiums significantly — teens are statistically the highest-risk age group. However, strategies exist to manage the cost: good student discounts (B average or better), completion of a recognized driver education course, and assigning the teen to a less expensive vehicle on the policy. Bruno shops multiple carriers specifically to find the best rate for families with new drivers in the Naples area.
I drive for Uber, DoorDash, or Instacart. Does my personal auto cover me?+
No. Personal auto insurance explicitly excludes commercial activity. If you're in an accident while actively driving for a rideshare or delivery platform, your personal policy will deny the claim. Uber and Lyft provide some coverage during active rides, but there are significant gaps between periods. A rideshare endorsement or commercial auto coverage is required to fill those gaps — this is one of the most commonly missed coverage issues we see in Southwest Florida.
